One thing that struck me this past weekend while at Eastbourne was that it didn't seem to matter what seminar I went to or the nature or title of it, each one was filled with tragedy or trauma, trouble and trials. Every speaker could recount situations in their lives of where they have been exposed to cancer, infant death, divorce, miscarriage, redundancy, etc etc, either directly or within their close families. It has never really hit me before, the number of people that are encountering cancer in such a personal way. It shocked me and made me ask the question, "How do people without a faith get by in life?" Some people say that Christians hold on to God as a crutch through life, that that is all their faith is, a crutch during those bad times. There really is so much more to it than that, but even if there wasn't, is that so bad? Others think that life for christians is all a bed of roses, these seminars proved to me that that so isn't the case - christans suffer just the same as others but God is good and helps us through, He is the crutch but so is the family of God, the Church. We are all there for one another, to help each other and share the burdens.
