For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever." 1 Peter 1 v 23-25

It is very humbling to think about eternity and our own finiteness. Bereavement can especially make you aware of that. My wife lost both her parents over the last four years and I lost my mother three years back. A friend in my congregation just lost his father quite unexpectedly last week.
I just read 'Men' by Bishop Al Stewart in Australia. He addresses his book to middle aged men and underlines how we face bereavement at this age. He points a lot to Ecclesiastes which we have studied in my Bible study group in recent months. One thing I got from his book is that what is translated as "vanity" in the AV or "meaningless" in Hebrew is the word for vapour - a temporary thing much like the grass in the verse that you cite.
It is good indeed to know that the Word of the Lord stands forever. "He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end" Eccl 3:11
O.
During the challenging times we need to learn to rely more upon God and the promises of His word. The verse you quote is a great one, we can never fully comprehend the magnitude of God.
